The United States has presented US flags to three Polish veterans of World War II to honour their struggle for Poland and the Allies against Nazi Germany.

The US defence attache in Warsaw, Colonel John Downey, presented the flags to Colonel Halina Jedrzejewska, who was a nurse during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against the German occupation, and to two fighters in that revolt, Col. Eugeniusz Tyrajski and Colonel Zbigniew Galperyn.

The flags had flown over Washington and were presented to the veterans on behalf of US Senator Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat.

The Germans killed some 200 000 Poles and flattened Warsaw in retaliation for the 63-day uprising. In a visit to Warsaw last year, President Donald Trump paid homage to the "desperate struggle to overthrow oppression".
