ZAMBOANGA CITY, Nov 19 (PIA) - The Department of Health (DOH) will conduct the first round of anti-polio mass vaccination or the Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio campaign in all regions in Mindanao including Zamboanga City which will start on November 25.

DOH asks parents and households not to resist the oral vaccination for their children to be able to protect them from the debilitating effects of polio.

The DOH further warns that the Type 2 Wild Type polio has been recorded in the country, and this campaign is the response and preventive measure on the reported resurgence of the virus in some parts of the country. The immunization will protect children 0-59 months old, or below 5 years old. Dr. Fatima Virginia Alamia assures the parents that the vaccines have no side effects to children.

The Zamboanga City Health Office (ZCHO) targets 95% or 102,890 children in the city to be immunized. They will be conducted in all barangays through health centers and through house to house visits. There are also different teams to be assigned in entry points, to include ports and terminals. There are also fixed points in areas where there are large number of children like malls, fast food chains and schools.

Children who will undergo this immunization will be marked with an indelible ink on their pinky finger.

The DOH also encourages the participation and cooperation of all stakeholders for the two-week mass immunization in Zamboanga City. The second round of immunization is scheduled on January 6, 2020. (RVC/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
